Feathered Robe of Celestial Nymph II

 (Shizuoka prefecture)

 [Tennyo no Hagoromo:天女の羽衣

(静岡県)]

He was sure that the woman was a celestial nymph he had ever heard of. The woman read his mind and said bashfully “You are right. I’m from the heaven. I was attracted by this beautiful scenery and came down here. It is my feathered robe. Please give it back to me." He was enthralled by her clear voice. But he didn’t want to hand it back to her because the robe in his hands was gloriously beautiful. “No,” he shook his head. The celestial nymph desperately asked him “I cannot go back to the heaven without it. Please, please give it back to me.”

The fisherman didn’t want to return such a precious treasure easily. But at the same time he thought that it’s wrong to annoy such a noble celestial nymph. Eventually he decided to hand it back to her. She was so happy to get it that she danced “the Dance with Feathered Robe” for him to express her thankfulness. The sea was lapping on the beach and exquisite sound of Gagaku was coming from the heaven. The sun was softly beaming as if it had been scattering gilt to them. She was gracefully dancing with her robe streaming in the soft breeze. He was standing motionless and staring at the dreamlike view just in front of him.
After a while, she said good bye to him and went slowly up and up to the heaven. The pine tree that is said to be the one that the celestial nymph flew down on is still in Miho-no Matsubara, Shizuoka prefecture.
